What Was the Pattern Day Trader (PDT) Rule?
Welcome to DTS Answers. Today’s question is: What is the Pattern Day Trader Rule—or, more appropriately now, what was the Pattern Day Trader Rule, also known as the PDT Rule?
If you started trading after February 2001, you probably assumed that traders always needed $25,000 to day trade. But that was not the case.
The Pattern Day Trader Rule was established after the technology-stock crash to help “protect” traders. I put protect in quotes because I feel it did the exact opposite.
However, you no longer need to memorize all the details of the old PDT Rule. As of June 4, 2026, it was replaced with risk-based margin requirements. This basically means that the SEC is leaving it up to the individual brokers to determine what they want to do.
The bottom line is that requirements can vary among brokers, but they can establish rules that allow you to trade with minimal capital while receiving the advantages of a day-trading account.
A day-trading account can be significant because you may be allowed up to four times your buying power, along with the immediate reuse of that capital. Therefore, even with a small account, many stocks can still offer very nice potential gains.
You also have the advantage of trading stocks, which can offer better opportunities because of the wide variety of available setups.
Naturally, just because you now have the opportunity to day trade does not mean that you should. Most traders lose money. You must either understand what you are doing or follow someone who does.
